Retinal Detachment
Retinal Detachment
Retinal detachment is a serious and sight-threatening eye emergency in which the retina — the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye — separates from its normal position. Once detached, the retina can no longer function properly, and without urgent treatment, this can lead to permanent vision loss.
Warning Signs
Seek immediate attention if you experience any of the following symptoms:
A sudden increase in floaters (dark spots, lines, or cobwebs drifting across your vision)
Flashes of light, like lightning streaks or camera flashes, especially at the side of your vision
A curtain or shadow coming over part of your visual field
Sudden blurred or distorted vision
These symptoms may indicate that the retina is tearing or detaching, and require same-day assessment.
Diagnosis
At EyeDoc Eye Clinics, our consultant ophthalmologists perform urgent, comprehensive eye examinations to detect retinal detachment. Tests may include:
Dilated retinal examination using specialised lenses
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) to capture detailed images of the retina
Fundus photography for documentation and monitoring
Treatment
Retinal detachment cannot heal on its own and always requires surgical repair. Depending on the type and severity, treatments may include:
Laser therapy (photocoagulation) or other therapy for retinal tears (before a full detachment develops)
Vitrectomy, scleral buckle, or pneumatic retinopexy for confirmed detachments
While surgery is usually carried out in hospital, early referral and diagnosis gives you the best chance of preserving vision.
Why Urgency Matters
Vision lost to retinal detachment is often irreversible. Immediate recognition of warning signs and prompt treatment are the only ways to save sight. If you notice sudden flashes, floaters, or a shadow in your vision, contact an eye care provider without delay.
